Tired of the limitations of being a black poet communicating with black people only, he decided to expand his audience, and headed to London at the age of twenty-two. With topics ranging from veganism to protecting the planet and all life on it, this collection of poems provides a wonderful blend of performance poetry that can be enjoyed by all. I am disappointed, however, that there are only 20 poems and I thus have only 15 more to read as a first reading of them. This approach will allow children to get excited about poetry and engage them at a young age. One of the big issues that Zephaniah brings up is enviormental issues, and he does this in a way that makes it interesting for children, and very relatable.

The poems make the reader want to continue reading as they are playful, engaging and funny. Some of the poems teach children about history, jobs, Christmas, greeting from different countries etc. Playful, able and provocative, this is achievement balladry on the folio at its actual best. In it, turkeys think, behave and feel like humans. I think that the use of both colloquial and formal language will help highlight areas in which they are most suitable to be used.

Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah These poems are exciting for children to read as they are based on Benji and his life. There are many turkeys, and they all fear Christmas time as humans destroy their fun and the right to live. Children enjoy rhymes, songs and texts which have a rhythm all of which are catered for in this poetry book. Although there were some poems that I couldn't connect with, I feel that with this collection, the poems are meant to be read aloud instead of read. I have so often said that if only humans could rise to the level of civilisation of Vervet monkeys, what a wonderful world we would have. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the poems again and would certainly use them as an excellent teaching resource and recommend this book to both children and adults.

He writes about what he wants to write and you can really get a sense of his personality and culture from what he writes. The types of poems that Zephaniah writes are so different and I think this demonstrates to children that poems should allow you to write about absolutely anything that you want to.
