The story begins on the day of reaping at District 12. They are at the edge of the district, which is enclosed by a high fence, and Katniss often crawls under the fence and enters the woods outside, where she forages and hunts. Then you learn Ether has been raising a secret garden, which you help her acquire plants for. The previous and present state of their relationship will be revealed throughout the book. I do not believe that Haymitch is a good mentor. I do not believe this is fair as 23 children die needlessly each year.
Katniss participates in hunting in the woods outside of District 12. The capitol is where the wealthy and ruling power reside. They look out to find a parachute containing a veritable feast of food. Once they are in the rooms, Katniss pushes Peeta in the chest which causes him to topple over into a vase and cut himself. In a daring act of suspense-building, the narrator decides not to tell us.
They head down the stream together, moving extremely slowly because of Peeta's wounds. He only stops when the train pulls into the station, blocking us from their view. He was a winner of the games and a former tribute from District 12. And what is coal used for? Then a bunch of careers come and kill a near by tribute. Effie Trinket is happy they have table manners, because last year's tributes ate with their hands. She, however, taught Katniss the art of healing with herbs.
All that just leaves Katniss annoyed. While he was looking away, Foxface came, ate some of the berries and died. If she has to kill him she might hesitate, costing her life. The two begin to gather blackberries for their feast and begin cracking jokes about the Hunger Games. There are stations where you can learn to trap, make knots, and other thing that may help them survive. Peeta seems a bit upset when he learns that Katniss has been given gifts whereas he hasn't, but claims not to be surprised since he believes she is Haymitch's favorite. They talk a bit about what it means to owe a debt, and Katniss tells Peeta how much his bread gift meant so many years before.
This year, Katniss' name has been entered 20 times, and Gale's has been entered 42 times. She also has no playfulness in her life. They pick a boy and a girl the Tributes from each district and get them to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. Chapter 3- After they finish with the rest of the ceremony, each of the tributes go into separate room so they can talk to their family. They discuss running away, but both are the caretakers of their families. They both did not want to kill the other, so they went for the next best thing, not giving the Capitol a victor. The first person to die in the arena is the boy from District 9.
After he leaves, she and Peeta are taken to the train station. Then an enouncer says theres been a rule change, that two people from one district can win. A day that each district is required to offer two tributes, a boy and a girl aged 12 to 18 years to participate in the games. He confirms with Katniss that she was an ally of Rue's, and Katniss tells him about the bread. After their all done they get on a train to the capital. The birds are a hybrid of jabberjays and mockingjays. The Games illustrate how thoroughly Panem citizens are at the mercy of the Capitol, since it keeps them subdued by making them complicit in the atrocities as audience.
Katniss is last to go, and it doesn't go as well as expected. They eat the soup as Katniss plots how she can get him asleep long enough to escape, knowing he is serious enough to potentially try and follow her.
